The Hilarious Importance of Proper Mowing

Proper mowing is essential to the health and appearance of your lawn, and let's face it, nobody wants a lawn that looks like a bad hair day. Mowing the lawn improperly will increase susceptibility to weeds, insects, disease, and will decrease turf vigor. Let's dive into some key mowing practices and have a chuckle along the way while helping you maintain a vibrant and lush lawn.

Height

Mowing the lawn too short is like wearing your pants too tight—uncomfortable and not a good look. The recommended mowing height is 3" during the growing season, but may be lowered to 2" for the first mowing of the year to give your lawn a spring fresh start. Keeping your grass at this height ensures it can absorb sunlight and nutrients, promoting strong root development and a dense turf. Remember, a well-groomed lawn is like a well-groomed beard – it needs to be just right!

Frequency

Frequency of mowing will vary depending on the growth rate of the turf. Think of it like a haircut; you don't want to wait until your hair is out of control. Mowing should be frequent enough to ensure that no more than 1/3 of the grass leaf blade is clipped off in a single mowing. If you go all Edward Scissorhands on your lawn and remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade, you’ll be removing the green material that absorbs sunlight, causing turf shock and sending the roots to therapy. Regular mowing helps maintain the optimal height and encourages healthy growth.

Grasscycling

Grass clippings do not need to be collected when proper mowing practices are used. Collecting lawn clippings is like throwing away the veggie scraps that could make great compost. They bring valuable nutrients back to the soil and may also save you from overindulging in lawn fertilizer. Collecting clippings won’t reduce thatch build-up. The main culprits behind thatch accumulation are roots and below-ground stems. Grasscycling allows clippings to decompose naturally—your lawn's version of leftovers!

Mower Blades

Keep your mower blades sharp. A dull blade is like trying to cut steak with a spoon—it tears the grass and leaves ragged tips, making your lawn look like it had a rough night out. A dull blade can also make your lawn susceptible to a variety of diseases. Regular sharpening and maintaining of your mower blades ensure a clean cut, giving your lawn the fresh look it deserves.

Common Practices to Avoid

·     Don't mow too fast: Rushing through mowing is like speed dating—you're going to miss something important and end up with uneven results.

·     Don't mow when the grass is wet: Wet grass is like a slippery dance floor, leading to clumping, clogged mowers, and potential damage to the grass blades.

·     Don't mow in the same pattern or direction each time: Change it up! Mowing in different patterns helps prevent soil compaction and encourages upright growth. It's like your lawn's version of cross-training.

By sticking to these mowing practices, you can ensure a healthier and more resilient lawn. Proper mowing promotes optimal growth, prevents disease, and enhances the overall appearance of your grass. Remember, consistency and a bit of humor are key to successful lawn care.
